Vodafone

New Year’s Day, 1985. Vodafone’s first chair, Sir Ernest Harrison, gets a mobile phone call from his son, Michael. This makes the history books as the UK’s first ever mobile phone call.

3 December, 1992. Vodafone’s director, Richard Jarvis, gets a text on his Orbitel TBU 901 from software engineer, Neil Papworth. ‘Merry Christmas,’ it says. This is the world’s first SMS text message. By 1999, we’ve hit 5 million customers.

A household name

We start the noughties by investing in a £5.9 billion 3G license – and signing a sponsorship deal with Manchester United. Next, we roll out roaming for 7.9 million customers, open our Newbury HQ, and launch the Vodafone Foundation. We end the decade with our famous ‘Power to you’ campaign and several awards to our name.

The future is exciting. Ready?

In 2011, our JustTextGiving partnership raises £44 million in donations. The next year, we acquire Cable & Wireless Worldwide in £1 billion deal. We become London’s #1 voice network, launch home broadband, VOXI, unlimited data plans and 5G, making a world-first holographic 5G call.
